Richard Schwan, age 87, passed away at home after a life deeply rooted in faith, hard work, service, and devotion to those he loved most.
Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Military Police Officer, carrying the values of service, honor, and duty with him throughout his life. He was a member of the American Legion and the Farm Bureau, where he built lasting friendships and shared in a strong sense of community.
Born with a deep love for the land, Richard, a lifelong area resident, spent his life farming and caring for the soil that gave him both purpose and peace. He was happiest outdoors—working fields, planting flowers, and caring for the home he loved. Whether he was building a new project, fixing something around the house, or settling in to work on one of his paintings, he loved staying busy with his hands.
He was a true collector at heart, especially fond of tractors and trains. A lifelong music lover, Rich could often be found enjoying his favorite songs while working around the house or relaxing with family. For many years, he played saxophone in The Serenaders, a local band with good friends.
Christmas held a particularly special place in Richard’s heart. He loved the traditions, the lights, the decorations, and most of all, the time spent with family. His warmth, generosity, and steady presence made every gathering feel meaningful and full of love.
Richard will be remembered for his quiet strength, hardworking and creative spirit, kind heart, and unwavering devotion to his family. His legacy will continue through the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carolyn (Bauman), and by his children: Lisa; Pat and wife Nickie, along with grandson Griffin; Matt and wife Amy, along with grandchildren Caleb, Daniel, Jennifer, and Eli; and Ryan and wife Patti.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Elmer, and his brothers, Robert and Gerald.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville with additional visiting time at Trinity Lutheran Church, 121 Broad Street, Monroeville, from 12:30 until the time of the service at 1:30 p.m., with Reverend Dan Pennington officiating.
