Penny Ann Samko Williams, 76, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, in Sandusky, Ohio, where she was born on January 3, 1949. Hers was a life filled with compassion, creativity, and unwavering devotion to family and community.
A proud graduate of Perkins HS, Penny continued her education at the Providence School of Nursing, Bowling Green State, and the Medical College of Ohio. She went on to dedicate 25 years as a Registered Nurse at Firelands Regional Medical Center. Her care and commitment touched countless lives.
Before entering nursing, Penny began her career at JCPenney in Accessories and Costume Jewelry. Interim Director at New Day Family Resource Center/Christian and Missionary Alliance, she managed every aspect of a complex, dynamic organization, providing needed resources to the community. In later years, she continued her service through her heartfelt efforts and devotion at the Sandusky GoodWill Dollar Store.
Penny was deeply involved in her community. She was an active member of the Lions Club and participated in the Norwalk Alliance Women’s Group. Her faith was central to her life; she was a devoted member of Norwalk Alliance Church. Her zeal for ministry extended abroad when she served 6 weeks as a missionary nurse for Kouchala Women’s and Children life in Mali, West Africa.
Penny’s love was boundless. She shared 58 beautiful years with her husband Jim Williams. They built a world full of laughter, love, and adventures. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Sheryl Conner (Mike Armour); son Ken Williams (Maryse); her grandchildren, the joy of her life, Hailey, Emily, and Gabriel Conner; brothers John Samko (Sue), Randy Samko (Char); cousins Pete Samko (Mary Anne), and Marla Samko and by all those whose lives were brightened by her presence.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Harriet Samko.
Penny had an extraordinary zest for life that radiated through everything she did. She found joy in reading and watching TV with her beloved dogs by her side. A gifted crafter, she created beauty from everyday objects—cards, decoupage pieces, garden art —and delighted in sharing those with others. Whether planning road trips or exploring new places through walking and sightseeing, Penny embraced each moment with curiosity and enthusiasm. She had a gift for words—writing poems and short stories—and a talent for public speaking on numerous topics. Her voice carried wisdom and warmth that left lasting impressions on those who heard it.
One of Penny’s proudest roles was as Navy Mom. She supported her son Ken throughout his remarkable 38-year military career with steadfast love and pride. From home stations to deployments during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Persian Gulf War—she stood beside him every step of the way, extending that same support to his fellow sailors.
May Penny Ann Williams’ memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her—and may we carry forward the light she so generously shared with us all.
