Melvin (Mel) Charles Leonhard, 76, of Monroeville, passed away on May 1, 2025, from respiratory failure. Born in Sandusky on March 25, 1949, he was the youngest son of the late Harold and Hazel (Gerwin) Leonhard.
Mel graduated from Milan High School in the class of 1968. During school he played the trumpet. After high school, he attended Tool and Dye School in Chicago, Illinois until he was drafted in the United States Army. While serving our country, he was stationed in Germany.
After his military commitments, he returned to his hometown area of rural Erie County to work at GE and later Arthurs' Factory in Huron. He enjoyed growing hot peppers and tomatoes in his garden to make hot sauces and salsa, until his age and health worked against him. He loved watching TV and movies. During his younger years he was competitive in bowling, golfing, and billiards. Mel liked riding motorcycles.
Mel is survived by his older brother, Harold (Lee Ann) of Mt. Gilead, nephews Larry (Emily), Duane (Julie), niece, Dona (Lee) and his neighboring friend, Steve Deering, who mowed his lawn, stopped in for visits, and checked in on him.
To respect Mel's wishes, no funeral services will be held. Burial will be in Meadow Green Memorial Park.
