Joseph C. Hohler, 92, of Berlin Heights passed away Tuesday evening, September 27, 2022, in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.
He was born January 22, 1930, in Berea, Ohio. Joseph attended St. Joseph Elementary School, Monroeville, and was a 1947 graduate of Port Clinton High School. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and supported the Berlin Air Lift prior to the Korean War. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University. Joseph had a diverse work history, working at Matthews Boat Company in Port Clinton, the former New-Departure Hyatt Division of General Motors, and retired in 1993 after thirty years of employment from the Ford Motor Company. Additionally, he was a partner with his brother-in-law at Landoll Publishing Company for a time. He and his wife also owned and operated the Bay Bell Grocery & Bait Store in Bay View for several years. Joe was known for his friendliness, cigars, and coffee. He enjoyed deer and turkey hunting, fishing, wood working, boating, air shows and gardening. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing horseshoes, and commemorating these events by taking pictures with his 35 mm or disposable camera.
He is survived by his four children, Joseph M. Hohler of Bellevue, Lisette (Kenneth) Post of Fremont, Stephen W. Hohler of Berlin Heights, and Gerald E. (Kelly) Hohler of Bailey Lakes, Ohio; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sophia, and Theodore Hohler; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Rita J. Hohler, in June of 2022; two children, Michelle Hohler and Wayne Hohler; parents, Clarence and Celia (Klekota) Hohler; one sister, Jean M. Doyle; and one brother, Gerald F. Hohler.
Friends may call from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm Friday, September 30, 2022, in the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville. Friends may also call from 9:00 am until time of prayer service at 10:30 am Saturday, October 1, 2022, at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, October 1, 2022, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel Street, Monroeville. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Monroeville.
