John P. Scheetz, 82, formerly of Vermilion passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 22, 2020 in the Ohio Veterans Home.
He was born to Louie and Evelyn (Bowers) Scheetz on March 4, 1937 in Mansfield, Ohio. John joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 and served honorably until 1957. In 1958 he re-enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1962. John was retired from the former Preston Trucking Company out of Mansfield. He was a life member of the VFW Post 7576 and a member of the American Legion Post 397. He was an Amateur H.A.M. Operator going by the call letters KB8COQ. John and his wife Carol loved the adventures experienced while on their Harley Davidsons. His hobbies included bowling, golf, and he was an avid Cleveland Browns fan. The most endearing quality John possessed was the ability to talk and make friends with almost anyone he met. In a short time, he could make strangers comfortable enough to share stories of their life with him. The family would like to thank everyone at the Ohio Veterans Home, both veterans and staff, for the care and friendships that both the family and John experienced during his time at the OVH.
He is survived by his children, Cindy (Tom) Trunk of Vermilion, Pamela (Pete) Fisher of Port Charlotte, FL, and David J. Scheetz of Vermilion; grandchildren, Stacey (Bill) Hildenbrand, Troy Costigan, Brooke (Will) Gruhlke, Travis Costigan, Stephanie Trevino, Brandon Puder, and Ashley (Steve) Bowers; 14 great grandchildren; sister, Linda Knowlton; sister-in-law, Susie Fuller, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and love of his life for 62 years, Carol (Downing) Scheetz on November 13, 2019; his parents; and one brother, Louie Scheetz.
A Celebration of Life for both John and Carol will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, January 25, 2020 in the VFW Post 7576, 7576 Poorman Road, Vermilion, Ohio.
