Obituary

Elizabeth “Bette” Cecilia (Tyler) Gies Wolfram has found her new home. For 102 years she proudly considered herself to be a Village of Monroeville resident and a loving member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of which she was its oldest member.
Bette was the third of six children born to Carl and Gertrude (Greenfelder) Tyler. Her family owned and operated Tyler’s Department Store (1879-1982) a third-generation dry goods store in downtown Monroeville. Bette and her siblings attended St. Joseph Elementary School and Monroeville High School. Bette was a member of the Class of 1936, the first class to graduate from the current high school building. She helped organize class reunions for as long as there were members to attend. She was the most “senior” Monroeville alumni.
Bette was born during the Spanish Flu pandemic near the end of the ‘War to end all Wars’ and experienced WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War and many conflicts; the good times of the 1920’s followed by the Great Depression and the many economic ups and downs of the last 102 years.
Bette married Herbert Gies in 1941, they had three children and shared 35 loving years together. When the children were of school age Bette entered the workforce first as a Monroeville High School Secretary and later as the Clerk Treasurer of the Bd of Education. In 1966 she became the first treasurer of the EHOVE JVS Board of Education. She was extremely proud of the part she played in the creation of the school and campus. After her retirement Bette was determined to learn a new skill or hobby every year. Grandchildren were sent to college with a handmade afghan. Ceramic nativity sets, chair caning and quilting were other crafts mastered.
Bette married Mark Wolfram also from Monroeville and they spent their retirement years traveling and wintering in Florida. Later, Bette kept busy volunteering in the Fisher Titus gift shop. She and her special friends were quite active in the Norwalk Senior Center, never missing an opportunity to travel with the group.
In 2010, Bette decided that she would be happier living with others and leaving the concerns of home ownership behind moved into Parkvue Assisted Living Center in Sandusky. Bette resided there until recently. A highlight of her month was a visit from Father Ron.
Bette was proud of her longevity and credited her deep faith, friends, family and an occasional martini.
Bette is survived by her children Michael (Kathie) Gies, Carmel, IN, Steven (Sandra) Gies, Westminster, MD, Kay (Jerry) Schindley, Monroeville, Patricia Gies, Stow; stepchildren James Wolfram, St. John Isle, FL, Mark (Mary Ann) Wolfram, Sun City, FL, Bernard Wolfram, Toledo; grandchildren Scott Gies, Jeffery Gies, Meagan (Fred) Gies, Paula (Lance) Miller, Jason (Brooke) Gies, Sean (Valerie) Gies, Sarah (Michael) Kaufman, Gregg (Amanda) Schindley, Beth (Andy) Speer, Jeff Wolfram, Jennifer (John) Epstein, Daniel (Deb) Wolfram, Karen (Nate) Zumach; 21 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Katie Tyler, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. There was always great excitement at Parkvue when the family assembled in the party room to celebrate Great Bette’s Christmas or birthday.
Bette was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert M. Gies; second husband, Mark H Wolfram; her parents; siblings Mary (Len) Winkler, James (Mildred) Tyler, Charles Tyler, Margaret (Walter) Schnellinger, Clara (Donald) Niver; daughter-in-law Jean Wolfram. We also fondly remember many of Bette’s dear friends.
