Gene M. Cherry, I, 89, of Monroeville passed away peacefully Friday, April 12, 2019 in the Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.

He was born in Sandusky to Henry and Clara (Hehrer) Cherry on March 23, 1930. He attended Monroeville High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Gene retired in 1992 from New Departure-Hyatt, Division of General Motors after 22 ½ years of service. He was a member of the Sandusky Power Squadron, Local Union 913 UAW, and Purple Martin Conservation Association. Gene’s hobbies included hit and miss gas engines and waiting for his martins to return every spring.

He is survived by six children; Gene (Pam) Cherry, II of Collins, Keith Cherry of Monroeville, Regina (Robin) Hite of Monroeville, Paul (Janine) Cherry, Crestline, Mary Beth (Bill) Simon of Norwalk, Patti (Jeff Wallen) Cherry of Monroeville; twenty grandchildren, forty-four great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; seven siblings, Lynn (Betty) Cherry of Bay View, Lonnie (Eleanor) Cherry, Wayne Cherry both of Monroeville, Celia Harding of Bryan, Ohio, Carol (Bob) Brutcher of Norwalk, Melvin (Joanne) Cherry of Monroeville, and David (JoAnn) Cherry of Norwalk; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings, Roy, Earl, Allen Cherry and Ellen Johnson, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Friends may call from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Monroeville Chapel, 109 Monroe Street, Monroeville. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 in the funeral home. Deacon Mike Wasiniak will officiate. Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Margaretta Township.
