Rita M. (Smith) Englert McMahon, 96, of Norwalk, passed away Monday afternoon, October 19, 2015 in the Norwalk Memorial Home following a brief illness.

She was born August 11, 1919 in Putnum County, Ohio.  Rita was a remarkable woman who led a life of caring and serving others.  She was married to Norbert Englert and raised three children, Tom, Betty and Bill along with taking care of parents, Hubert and Amelia Smith.  Norbert died in 1949.  In 1956 she married George T. McMahon whom she was married to for 51 years and cared for George’s parent’s Thomas and Amanda McMahon of rural Bellevue, Ohio. 

She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Monroeville.  She worked for her brothers Ike and Paul Smith at Paul’s grocery store in Monroeville.  Rita had also volunteered at the gift shop at Fisher Titus Hospital.  She was the past owner and worked at the Heritage House, located in the Huron County fairgrounds.  She enjoyed refinishing furniture, attending many auctions and quilting. 

Rita was the last member of the Huber Smith family of ten in Monroeville, the last member of the Eugene Englert family of five in Norwalk and the last of the Thomas McMahon family of five from Bellevue. 

She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth “Betty” (Owen) Schafer; eight grandchildren, Denise (Brett) Staschke, Debbie (Mike) Smith, David (Sandy) Schafer, Dorene (Ryan) Lawrence, Linda Kennedy, Laurie (Jim) Price, Michael (Ann) Englert, Jennifer Englert of Texas, eleven great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews of the Smith, Englert and McMahon’s.

She was preceded in death by her husband’s, Norbert E. Englert and George T. McMahon; her parents, Hubert and Amelia Smith; two sons, Thomas N. Englert in 1998 and William “Bill” E. Englert in 1962; one grandson, William “Billy” Nelson, 2009; siblings, Wilfred (Lela) Smith, Bertha (Ed) Steiber, Joseph (Ina) Smith, Leo (Florence) Smith, Ike (Louise) Smith, Alfred (Frances) Smith, Pete (Mary) Smith, Paul (Ortrude) Smith, Frances (Jerry) Bauer; numerous nieces and nephews.   

Friends may call from 9:30 am, Friday, October 23, 2015 until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 66 Chapel Street, Monroeville.  Fr. Ron Schock will officiate.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  A funeral luncheon will follow in the church social hall.
