Charles “Mac” James McAllister, Sr., 97, of Sandusky passed away Friday, April 22, 2016 in the Stein Hospice Care center following a brief illness.
He was born in Skedee, Oklahoma on February 14, 1919 to Robert Earl and Rose (Hadley) McAllister.  Charles grew up in Arkansas City, Kansas.  In his youth he attended Chilocco Indian School and spent his summers with his grandmother, Susie Box, on her farm in Pawnee, Oklahoma.  In his early twenties Charles worked at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas as a welder in the production of the Stearman Biplane and the (then) new B-29 Super Fortress for WWII.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a medical corpsman stationed in San Diego, California. 
At the naval base in San Diego he met his future wife, Mary Catherine Schaeffer, who was a Navy nurse.  They married and returned to Ohio.  Charles went to work at New Departure-Hyatt and retired from General Motors after 30 years of service.  Charles had a joyful nature and enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, working crossword puzzles and reading novels about the Old West. 
He was a long-standing and dedicated Mason.  He was member of Roby Lodge No. 534, F.&A.M., Monroeville, was a Knight of York Cross of Honour, Huron Chapter No. 7, R.A.M., Norwalk Council No. 24, R.&S.M., Norwalk Commandery No. 18, K.T., a member and past Patron of Althea Chapter No. 438, O.E.S., Monroeville and the North East Oxford Farm Bureau.
He is survived by three children, Charles (Diana) McAllister, Jr., of Cape Coral, Florida, Thomas McAllister and Margaret “Peggy” (Howard) Reinbolt both of Sandusky; three granddaughters, Carrie Handy of Sandusky, Lorrie (Matt Ogborn) McAllister of Arlington, Massachusetts and Carla McAllister of Cape Coral, Florida; three great grandchildren, Andrew Smith of Richmond, Texas, Iris and Harriet McAllister of Arlington, Massachusetts.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Mary in 1989; his parents, and one sister, Katherine.
Friends may call Monday, April 25, 2016 from 2:00- 4:00 & 6:00- 8:00 PM at the Pfeil Funeral Home, Sandusky Chapel, 617 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, and on Monday the Althea Chapter will hold Order of the Eastern Star Memorial Services at 3:30 PM and Roby Lodge will hold Masonic Memorial Services at 7:00 PM.  On Tuesday, April 26, 2016 the body will be taken to St. John’s United Church of Christ, 2712 Mason Road W, Oxford Township, Milan where friends may call from 9:00 AM until time of funeral services at 10:00 AM.  The Rev. Wendy Schindler-Chasney will officiate.  Burial will be in the St. John’s Cemetery, Oxford Township.
Memorial contributions may be made in care of the McAllister family.
